Children's Day celebrations in Nigeria.

Children's Day is celebrated on May 27 in Nigeria. It is a public holiday for Primary and Secondary school children. Due to the large size of the country, only few group of children (schools or any other organization) are selected to march past parade.

The children are usually given treats such as an outing or doing jobs that adults would normally do. In some situations, primary and secondary school children compete in military parades format for a prize which will be given at the end of the competition.

Religious groups in Nigeria also celebrate children's day in grand style. Many private and public organizations usually put together children's party for privileged and less privileged children in a bid to give them a sense of belonging. It is also a day media organizations analyze the plight of children in the society and efforts government and non government agencies make to better the lot of children.

This year’s Children’s Day, marked against the background of the over 300 schoolgirls abducted 1 year and 43 days ago from Chibok, should not be another speech-making, march parade day. For once, meaningful attempt should be made to assess the various challenges frontally confronting our children. If, indeed, these children are the leaders of tomorrow.
Nigeria must commence a programme of concrete action on education, health, welfare and overall well-being of children to prepare them, both in mind and body, for the challenge of tomorrow’s leadership. The Nigerian child is faced with a number of recurring problems.
These include poverty, social inequality, failed educational system, family problems, peer pressure, social and religious conflicts in which children are used as foot soldiers, or even domestic servants, street urchins, sex slaves etc.
In celebrating this year's Children's Day, let us not forget the children yet to be rescued. Let us strengthen the bond with our children and loved ones. Children are the leaders of tomorrow, tomorrow starts today and leadership begins with the activities of the present moment.

From ALL of us at OluwaMiranda's Blog, we wish your children and your wards, Happy Children's Day.
