WORLD TOURISM DAY

Every year, 27th September, 2014 is "World Tourism Day" (WTD). WTD is a global observance to highlight tourism's social, cultural, political and economic value. 

WTD 2014 is being held under the theme Tourism and Community Development - focusing on the ability of tourism to empower people and provide them with skills to achieve change in their local communities.

Tourism is the travel for recreation, leisure, religious, family business purposes, usually of a limited duration. Tourism is commonly associated with trans-national travel, but may also refer to travel to another location within the same country. 

The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people "traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes". I believe that the purpose of going on tours is to see, feel and experience a different environment, and come back home to recreate and rebirth that experience into the lives and the environment that I previously dwelt. This is where community development comes in, since Community development seeks to empower individuals and groups of people by providing them with the skills they need to effect change within their communities. These skills are often created through the formation of large social groups working for a common agenda.
