International Youth Day 2015

International Youth Day (IYD) is an awareness day designated by the United Nations.  International Youth Day is observed annually on 12 August. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. The first IYD was observed on August 12th, 2000.

The theme of International Youth Day 2015 is “Youth Civic Engagement”. The engagement and participation of youth is essential to achieve sustainable human development. Yet often the opportunities for youth to engage politically, economically and socially are low or non-existent.
More efforts are needed to raise awareness about the importance of youth civic engagement and its benefits to the individual and to society, including for sustainable development as well as resilience and wellbeing.
The International Youth Day 2015 campaign aims at promoting civic engagement and participation of youth in politics and public life, so that young people can be empowered and bring a full contribution to society, development and peace. During IYD, concerts, workshops, cultural events, and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organizations take place around the world.
This year, we are going to have a social media discussion on this topic. Join us on www.facebook.com/OluwaMirandasBlog and twitter.com/@oluwamiranda to share your views about the issues facing the average Nigerian Youth. Discussion starts at 3:00 PM (GMT +1). Can't wait to meet you there!
