INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY

Today is December 3, 2014: International Day of People with Disabilities. Just like every other people celebrated at one time of their lives or the other, people with disabilities also deserves to be celebrated. This event is promoted by the United Nations, since 1992 with varying levels of success around the planet. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The theme for this year is "SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT,THE PROMISE OF TECHNOLOGY".

According to the World Health Organisation (1976), "At least 10% of the world's population, or 650 million people, live with a disability" also in 2009, WHO states that "in many low-income and middle-income countries, only 5-15% of disabled people who require assistive devices and technology have access to them".

In the light of these, I must comment that I do not like to consider the statistics as a whole before making a change. When we look at the whopping 650 million people that need our help, we might get exhausted by just imagining the statistics.

I believe in helping one person at a time, where I am, when I can.

This is why I introduce to you, one of my longest friends and closest person to me that has been living successfully with a disability for over 30 years now. He happens to be a graduate of Computer Science and has an MBA in business administration. I totally respect him and as it is, he mustn't how I have written these words about him.

I am taking this time and post to celebrate Mr Onyema Medua.

Thank you for bringing so much encouragement and sunshine into our lives. We are very blessed to have a brother and friend like you in our lives.

OluwaMiranda and Friends will like to purchase a new wheelchair for Medua as our Christmas gift to him. We got one last year but unfortunately, the chair has deteriorated so much that there is need for another. For contributions to the cause, please pay into his sister's account what your heart wills and God will surely bless you as we but smiles...probably even tears of joy of his face this Christmas. The account details are: Onyema Kikanwa, GTBank: 0050600592. Please indicate "wheelchair" on your teller and kindly text your name to 08188402728 and amount paid.
Thank you for always contributing to making lives and living better for everyone.
God bless you.
